Revisiting the Invisibility of (Male) Bisexuality: Grounding (Queer) Theory, Centering Bisexual Absences and Examining Masculinities  / Erich Steinman.

Journal of Bisexuality, 11 (2011) 4 (oct-dec), p. 399-411
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 11 (2011) 4 (oct-dec), p. 399-411
samenvatting: The article draws upon research published in the Journal of Bisexuality since the author's 2001 article to make observations about bisexuality research and about continuing sex and gender differences in bisexual visibility. Great interest in queer theory reflects the preponderance of theorizing about bisexuality as a transformative, liberatory and disruptive social identity. Advocating for sociological approaches and the analytic inclusion of nonbisexual identified but behaviorally bisexual individuals, the author suggests that more empirical attention to material relations, social structures and everyday social interactions is needed to complement the symbolic emphasis of queer theory and cultural studies. Further incorporating analytical attention to non-bisexual-identified individuals would better ground bisexuality studies and would involve a redirection of critical attention to the multiple social processes that generate bisexual "absences." Critical gender studies, which identify masculinity as a perpetually threatened status requiring continual performance to ward off discrediting stigmas, is identified as a promising framework for examining the continuing invisibility of male bisexuals and of bisexual behavior among men. Bisexual Epistemologies: A Journey from Nausea to Commitment  / Serena Anderlini-D'Onofrio.

Journal of Bisexuality, 11 (2011) 4 (oct-dec), p. 465-479
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 11 (2011) 4 (oct-dec), p. 465-479
samenvatting: This occasional piece captures the experience of being a guest editor for four issues of the Journal of Bisexuality, from 2003 to the present time. It is also a reflection on that experience. What there is to learn from it in terms of creating a culture of research on bisexuality that empowers people to live authentic lives - and fulfill Fritz Klein's promise of a healthy bisexuality whose gift to the world is the joy of 100% intimacy. The article is made of an introduction to the four issues, on women and bisexuality in a global perspective, on polyamory and bisexuality, on bisexuality and queer theory and on community-related research on bisexuality that gives off the effect of a bi utopia, or bitopia. It discusses the Fritz Klein intellectual legacy and what it means in terms of understanding the role of bisexuality in today's world and its potential to contribute to a paradigm shift toward an epistemology based on love for love, or erotophilia. It discusses in depth the circumstances under which the 'miracle' of '10 years of bisexuality' has been possible in a decade of planetary disarray and human distress. And it gives special attention to the circumstances in which the four issues came into being. The article further samples significant contributions to the issues, including those by Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli, Betty Dodson and Deborah Anapol, all of whom are pioneers and leaders in the sex-positive movement. Finally, the article also positions the author as a scholar activist whose method of criticism can be termed 'holistic' because it integrates correlated approaches synergistically, including close reading and cultural theory. Introduction to the Special Issue : EuroBiReCon: (Inter)National Research Frontiers  / Emiel Maliepaard.

Journal of Bisexuality, 18 (2018) 1, p. 1-14
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 18 (2018) 1 , p. 1-14
samenvatting: This guest editorial is dedicated to introducing the First European Bisexual Research Conference, its theme, and, most importantly, the contributions to this special issue. I briefly discuss the specific context of this conference to explain its European focus, embeddedness in Dutch bisexual activism, and its standing on shoulders of giants (in particular the UK Bi(Re)Con). Secondly, I introduce the theme of the conference, (inter)national research frontiers, which reveals our conviction that contact zones are key to further advancing bisexual theorizing and connecting these studies with broader disciplinary and, sometimes, interdisciplinary theories of the social sciences. Thirdly, I provide a short picture or impression of the conference itself to show the diversity in contributions and research frontiers. Finally, and most importantly, I discuss relevant research frontiers to contextualize and introduce the contributions of this special issue.

Bisexuality : What Is It?  / Anastasia Toufexis.

Time, 140 (1992) 7 (aug), p. 49-51
bron: Time jaargang: 140 (1992) 7 (aug), p. 49-51
samenvatting: In a world where sexual orientation is polarized into heterosexuality and homosexuality, bisexuality comes as a disturbing challenge, at once a riddle and a discomfort. In the early 90's, bisexuality had been hard to overlook. Bisexual characters were the newest twist in movies and tv-shows, while the advent of AIDS had made bisexuality a matter of medical concern. The activism had sparked a new debate about sexuality in general: "Are people essentially either straight or gay, with bisexuality being merely the unnatural-by-product of confusion and repression among some homosexuals? Or is bisexuality a third distinct orientation? Is sexuality governed by biology or culture? Is it fixed, an identity that is set early and endures through life? Or is it fluid, shifting with time and temptation?" Some scientific theories and personal experiences are presented in this article, along with the discovery of bisexual behavior amoung apes and dolphins as two highly intelligent mammals in the animal kingdom.

Bisexuality : What's It All About?  / Margaret Mead.

Redboek (1975) 7 (jan), p. 29-31
bron: Redboek (1975) 7 (jan), p. 29-31
samenvatting: American cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead (1901-1978) argued that we must recognize bisexuality as a normal form of human sexuality. When the Gay Liberation Movement, back in the 70's by its protests and demands, had brought into full light of day the problems of men and women who, following deep personal preference, do choose members of their own sex as lovers and living companions, she stated that people should open their minds to a clearer understanding not only of homosexuality but also of our human capacity to love members of both sexes.
